Can A Computer Repair Place Take Your Drives?
I don’t know very much about computers, but I needed my computer repaired. . . mainly cleaned and the computer wouldn’t turn on. I went and picked it up, and went to use a disk to install a program and it says that I only have A drive and C drive and my Recovery Drive. My CDwriter and DVD/CD one is not listed and I can’t get to them. Could the computer place have done something?

this is a known issue that is caused by a recent microsoft update.
to fix this do the following:
Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Click Start
Click Run
Type regedit and then click OK
Registry Editor starts
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer by clicking the + symbol next to the name
Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Expand SYSTEM
Expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control
Expand Class
Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - click on the name and NOT the +
In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters
Note A UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.
On the Edit menu, click Delete
When you receive the warning message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.
Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step.
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, stay in the same location as you were for the UpperFilters entry. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters.
Note A LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you receive the warning message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the LowerFilters registry entry
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.
Exit Registry Editor.
Step 4: Restart the computer
this will fix this
hope it helps

Sure they could have left the CDRW/DVD out of your computer by accident. I really don’t think they’d steal it though. I mean, it’s just not worth their time. If it’s a real computer repair place, I don’t think they’d steal something that inexpensive. It’s just not worth it. I can see how hardware components could be left out or forgotten. Still, that would cause some trouble, and it might be they didn’t reinstall the drivers for your CD and DVD/CD. Go to your Device manager and hardware profiles and see if there’s a yellow exclamation point beside your CD/DVD etc… You can alway find the driver for your particular drive at drivers.com or some other sites if you don’t have the driver discs.

Take it back to them, and tell them to install the drives. They deleted the drivers. If you installed these drives, you should have a CD disk that has the drivers on it. Sounds like they reinstalled Windows. When they do, they need to make sure the drivers are saved, or look them up at the manufacturers website, and download these drivers. Doesn’t sound like a very good computer repair shop. Hope they don’t have the name ‘Geek’ in their name, because they suck!

Well if it was working before you took it to them, they must have. I doubt the stole the whole drive, but I would go back to the store and demand they fix the problem because it was their fault. If they refuse threaten them with a law suit (even if you know your not actually going to sue them).

If they are physically in the computer, they didn’t take them. They could have possibly not reconnected them when they put the computer back together
