There are many laptop problems that trigger people to thinking they need a new laptop screen. As a laptop repair company we come across these problems on daily basis. Today I thought I should outline some key laptop issues on why you don’t need to change your laptop screen. Here are a few symptoms you might be encountering on your laptop:

Laptop powers on but nothing on screen, black screen, blank screen, laptop doesn’t start, no power on laptop. If you have the following problems then follow the instructions below on how to resolve this issue.

Fixing the “nothing on screen” issue is all about experimenting. This is what you should:

1. Try removing your laptop battery and charger from the laptop. Once done, hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds. Then release and plug your charger in without the battery. Once done power on and see if your laptop comes on. If this didn’t work, try number 2. Just keep on going through each step until you have a solution to your blank laptop screen.

2. Unplug charger from laptop and remove the memory. The memory also known as RAM is located beneath your laptop. So you will have to open the bottom case of your laptop to get to your memory. Once the memory is removed try powering the laptop on again with the charger plugged in. Bad memory can cause the laptop not to start up appropriately.

3. If you have removed the memory and tried number 1, next thing would be is to remove your hard drive in the same manner you removed your memory. The hard drive is generally where all your data is stored, so be careful. You will need a small screwdriver to open the laptop bottom case to get to the hard drive. Like before, once the hard drive is removed try plugging in and powering on the laptop. No joy, move onto step 4.

4. If all the above didn’t work for your laptop, then it’s mostly likely to be a problem with your screen or motherboard. There is only one way to know which one could be the problem.  If you have a monitor or a LCD TFT with VGA ports, try plugging that into the laptop and then powering on. NOTE: You will need to hold the FN key and the small logo located in the F keys which looks like 2 screens. This triggers your laptop to switch to a external screen if there is one present. If this work’s your laptop display should be visible on your external monitor. If not then unfortunately I have bad news, this is 95% a problem with your motherboard.

To be honest we wouldn’t want someone to repair their motherboard themselves as you can cause more damage to the laptop. Without the right tools, skills and experience there is very little you can do yourself to repair your laptop motherboard. contact WebMax and we can help you repair your laptop motherboard. So you’ve reinstalled Windows again and you have managed to find all the drivers except for one your webcam. In device manager on most HP laptops it says “Webcam 101″. If you haven’t tried already the first thing I would do is visit http://welcome.hp.com/country/uk/en/support.html and find your exact laptop make and model. Your laptop make and model is written underneath the laptop itself. Using that information punch in your laptop model number on HP’s website and that should take you to all the drivers available for that laptop.

If you have tried HP’s website and found no luck the next thing to do is update your system. If your running Windows XP visit the Microsoft Update Site, if your using Windows Vista go to Control Panel and click on Windows Update. Windows Update is a tool designed by Microsoft to help keep your laptop up to date. It scans your computer/laptop for any hardware drivers that need installing and checks for new security updates. If your running Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Update didn’t help find your Webcam 101 driver for your HP laptop, the only solution I found was to upgrade your Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. Reason behind this is because Windows needs service pack 2 or greater in order for the webcam to work.

At WebMax we have recently noticed a large number of HP Compaq DV series laptops coming through and they pretty much have the same problems. The problem you will find is that your laptop will be working perfectly fine and then one day the screens just goes black. Although your laptop lights are on you will still see nothing, this is caused by over-heating and upon a closer inspection we have realized why. Hp Compaq DV Series laptops come in 17inch and 15.6inch, the larger the screen the more the graphics is used. So if you want to save your self some laptop repairs money, don’t buy a HP Compaq DV laptop. Especially DV9000 or Dv5000, these 2 models in particular have many problems as well as the graphics. Invest in a a laptop which uses carbon fibre material to insulate its laptops, like Sony Vaio. However they are much more but will keep your costs down in the near future.
